flying to glasgow

after the mad wind of thursday i had a beautiful flight to glasgow. do you ever have working days when you think your job is more of a privilege than a chore ? i quite often do, and this was one of them.

i arrived in a jolly good mood (thanks to BMI business class)

i did feel a bit embarrassed to be in business class, on the ‘other side’ of the blue curtain. especially when they said on the tannoy (t-annoy?) that we’d be getting a complementary hot meal whilst those in economy could purchase a sandwich.
we could chose between ‘traditional’ or ‘vegetarian’. i thought traditional sounded a good way of describing a hot cooked breakfast. but then they offered ‘traditional’ or ‘early grey’ tea – so ‘traditional’ obviously means ‘regular’. but you can’t say that ‘regular’ in posh business class !

the hounslow anti-dog poo brigade
“people who let their dogs foul pavements are dirty bad-mannered, unhygienic and under Byelaw 15 can be fined £20”:

i’ve put on lots of weight since i started driving to work. i’m now walking up to 40km/week instead of up to 80km/week previously so it’s not surprising. anyway, i’ve starting making an effort to do a 30 minute speed walk during the day when possible so my body (and brain) doesn’t seize up.

here are a number of dog signs all within 5 minutes walk of gillette corner (which is near my office). i get the feeling someone in hounslow council is a little anti-dog poo.

sometimes the idea is better than the final photo
i nearly managed to get a fantastic picture here. the idea was to get the police phone box between the two police men, flanked either side by the two zebra crossing lights.
i even thought i might chance a zoom in to get their helmeted heads either side of the light at the top of the box.
but … it was raining and very windy, there was a lamppost in the way, i wasn’t sure if you are allowed to take photos of policeman on duty and the policemen themselves kept moving about so it was difficult to line up (and i thought they might turn round).
perhaps more importantly, it was just in front of the US embassy in london, so i thought i’d best not look too suspicious (or i might have been shot by the armed police standing near by)
call me a coward, but some photos i just have to do without ! still, you get the idea

graffiti review of the kooks
i spotted this bit of pen graffiti on a poster in a tube station. i suspect this wasn’t written by a regular graffito. more likely some high brow arts reviewer with anger in his (or her) heart. the underlining at the end gives it away. it’s got a certain teacher’s feel to it. or perhaps it was a passing Melody Maker journalist (pardon my retrocity)

a bit of trouble with wind
![]()
it was a bit windy yesterday. i had a meeting in london and got blown along most of the southbank. i took this photo of the wobbly bridge as i was surprised it was so empty. in fact it was shut.
i was pleased with the photo though as it was just a grab shot, with a sideways gale wobbling me, but i still managed to get it vaguely level and centred ! i love the wide angle on my new compact camera.

it took me three and half hours to get home which was a bit of a shame. in fact i spent 5 and a half hours travelling today for a 3 hour meeting. just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse i saw the colour scheme on this screen.
today, i’m off to glasgow for the day, so let’s hope the wind calms down a bit !

and finally here’s a bollard waving a streamer in the wind. i tried to take a video of it, but the wind stopped. so it looked a bit boring. which it was.
