  1. it’s a sort of instant raffle where you pick your tickets from (traditionally) a revolving metal drum or a plastic bucket. the tickets are all folded up so you don’t know what you are getting.
    you open your ticket and if it’s a generous tombola any number ending 0 or 5 wins a prize (if it’s less generous it might be just numbers ending in a zero).
    the fun is then looking for your prize which is usually something like a bottle of wine. the prize will have the tombola number stuck on it.
    tombola prizes are usually of much lower quality than raffle ones are normally stuff which has been donated. so if you win a bottle of wine, chances are it’s been on the tombola circuit for a number of years and you are best not drinking it.
    kids love tombolas. and so do i. i see them as a kind of rubbish russian roulette where you actually don’t want to win !

  2. …at least tombolae are not generally fatal (unless the wine is particularly rough).
    Great tombola-like attraction at the Swallowfield fair as I recall, rigged for the kids.
