this is an interesting one. i think you can say one penny or one pence.
as long as people know what you are on about then i recon it doesn’t matter.

Looking at 1p and 2p coins I see that the first says “one penny” and the seconds says “2 new pence”. So maybe you also need the “new” if it is two. (5, 20, 50 don’t have the “new” – I don’t have a 10)
you don’t have a 10 pence piece ? i forgot your wife doesn’t trust you with such high value coins.
(other than the 20 and 50 penny coins of course)
we should move to Euro(s). it would be much simpler than all these sovereigns, nickels and nuggets.
