as also seen here
"people who let their dogs foul pavements are dirty bad-mannered, unhygienic and under Byelaw 15 can be fined £20":
i've put on lots of weight since i started driving to work. i'm now walking up to 40km/week instead of up to 80km/week previously so it's not surprising. anyway, i've starting making an effort to do a 30 minute speed walk during the day when possible so my body (and brain) doesn't seize up.
here are a number of dog signs all within 5 minutes walk of gillette corner (which is near my office). i get the feeling someone in hounslow council is a little anti-dog poo.
jenny sent me this photo of a person cleaning up after their dog in a very uncomfortable way. it loks like they are using a pokey stick and a plant pot.
jewel also sent me this fantatic wobbly dog being tapped from behind with a spade !
now this is an interesting dog poo sign as it shows someone about to step in one. which is a nice graphic reminder of why cleaning up poo is a good plan.
this sign was stuck high up a wall which meant you couldn't look at it and see where you are putting your feet, which is a shame as you are more likely to stand in some canine plop that way i would have thought. oh well.
this is a pretty historic photo. kezia spotted the dog sign and said "do you want to take a photo dad", so i said yes.
she ran up to it and posed in front of it. just as i was about to take the photo she said "make sure you get emily-rebecca in", so i did.
emily rebecca (not sure about the hyphen) is kezia's (invisible) friend who came on the walk with us. this is her first appearance in a photo.
we've had this dog sign before, but it was in the early days, and this is on a black bin with a yellow lid.
things to note are the shape of the person's head, their crouching position and the words 'use this bin' which are quite aggressive
we went for a family outing to the Cotswold Wildlife Park yesterday and it was very good.
i knew it would be good when i saw this sign, which covers so many different categories and includes the word 'poop' ! Expect lots of pictures of animals over the next few days.
i sent kezia to stand in front of this sign as i was too scared.
this chap has a very strange head and oddly bent feet. and he seems to be picking up that poo without any gloves on.
it similar to this one and these ones.
it's fine for everyone else to smoke, except guide dogs. of all the dogs available to modern man i would have thought that a guide dog would be the least likely to smoke as it understands better than other dogs about medical related issues.
but i could be wrong. perhaps the pressure of the job gets to them. we know st bernards turn to drink, so perhaps guide dogs find relief through smoking.
i don't normally post the same dog twice, but this chap is standing next to a cigarette thus allowing me to make a pun around the concept of 'dog ends'. here's the original version of this chap
and here's another varient:
keith (the other half of pootlecat) sent me these two picture.
and this is a more bizarre curiosity. keith remarked on the hands of the child, but i think the person doing the funky dancing on the bottom left is much more interesting !
here is a dog sign has been graffiti'd and posted to fantastic website Pictures of Walls. this one is here
i found it via Russell's blog (Russell reads this blog i think, so "hello Russell" if you're passing).
not a great one this as it was taken out of a car window as we speeded by. but if you look above the standard 'infinity dog sign' you can see a different sort of dog.
it's a tarantino version of this one.
you might have heard about the diana memorial garden ? it's been a bit of a classic - originally a nice idea but went all a bit wrong when people slipped in the water channel. oh well
it's actually looking very nice now
and see how many categories i can put it in: no dogs, no cycles, people, royalty and slippery floor
it's a long way to tipperary, but if you do go you should look out for this dog sign. a standard north european dog picture, but with some nice local information around it.
i like the way it makes it clear it's addressed to the dog owners rather than the dogs themselves.
this photo was sent to me by Jenny (a great artist - check out her webpage).
She says "Here's one from a B&B in Ireland - the woman who ran the place was very stern, and one of the other patrons nicknamed her "The Warden" --- this is a sign out front of the property"
here is a strange dog. it's legs don't look right to me. but then i know little about much.
on a related note, i got an email from Sergei, the chap that runs this website. it's another collection of dog signs and there's surprising little overlap between our two sites !
thanks
andrew kindly sent me these photos of signs of south african hounds.
this one is very strict and informs us that you can't utilise the garden if you are a dog.
this one meanwhile warns that transgressors will be prosecuted.
note the floating dog owner (possibly having eaten some of those magic plants shown next to (which you also can't smoke according to the next one along).
here are a couple of dog signs from france from reader Wayne who's from frankfurt, but from britain.
here's a classic french dog with the round head top.
wayne writes: this sign has been around the block; noteworthy for almost random geometric shapes for body parts
and here's some instructions on cleaning away its mess. the dog at the top looks good.
wayne writes: cleaning up after pooping; the pictures are worth 1000 words, which is just as well, cos I don't understand the words
and here's some skates he sent. i think the skateboard looks more like some menacing eyes.
wayne writes: stunningly accurate inline skate, and v basic skateboard, both banned. The sign is set in its own paving stone in the ground.
i'm always interested in new dogs signs, particularly when they offer a completely different graphical way of describing said quadropeded woof-ler.
this dog from Almeda has the strangest legs you've ever seen (and what a great background of windsurfers)
if you want to understand more about the detail (and why you can't drink coctails on the beach) you'll need to read the detail:
here is a dog sign from the recently remotivated Dan. He says:
Found this near Berkeley yesterday on a USA non-bank holiday. Note the rare head-on profile, not the side profile usually found on these signs. And those ears! And the disembodied hand! Hope you enjoy it!
it looks a bit like someone is trying to hit it with a fly swat.
what do all these thing REALLY mean here ?
look at this great no dog fouling sign from my long lost flat mate jeremy.
i like how they've used the word 'refrain' in the sentence. it's usually 'please refrain from letting your dog ...'. here you've simply got to 'refrain your dog'
but the highlight of the sign is the accuracy of the fine formula. truely this sign was created by a mathematician
.
look at this dog. i've featured him before both here and here but not in such detail. the eyes are baaaad eyes. he's not happy about not being let in.
he's also had his head chopped off (note the red line which goes under the dog, but we can clearly see it through its gaping neck hole).
not a nice sign.
here's a sign from the belgian design museum. you'd expect it to be good, but this is most excellent.
they had two giant posters of airport signage on display in a special exhibition but there was no photography inside which was a shame. you'll just have to visit yourself.
not visit yourself. visit the museum. visiting yourself would be slightly odd. unless you were a timetraveller. but even that would be odd, unless you were going forward in time in which case you'd already know you were a timetraveller and it would be less odd.
but what is this ? a cat with its eyes closed drinking through a straw ?
sent by matt the web landlord
spar (a 24x7 local supermarket chain) has its own dog signs. a nice bit of brand extension.
hunstanton dog control zone sign:
and me:
can you believe it, but funkypancake is featured in a national magazine this month !
Dogs Today magazine has done a special feature on dog signs and funkypancake features quite heavily (thanks to Mark the journalist for the excellent write-up)
you must rush out and buy a copy. it's the May 205 issue you want, priced £3.50 (three and a half pond starling)
and there's a rather nice quote i shall treasure:
"[funkypancake] has a lust and zeal for life and all its quirks that those with far fewer worries in the world could be quite jealous of. From the mundane to the mad, the interesting to the absurd, [he] captures moments and objects that few of us ever notice ... and perhaps don't need to."
here's a weird dog sign. if you stare at it long enough its mouth starts to look like two ears.
it's actually a dog barking in to the air with a mouth like a beak !
i don't know if you noticed, but we've been on a family holiday for the last week. i've got literally hundreds of photos stockpiled including quite a few new dog signs.
but today i offer you this new dog sign which was on a lampost outside windsor castle. it's a pity charles and camilla didn't walk by as i took it, but you can see the media centre in the background.
this sign is for all those who've come to the blog as a result of the Dog's Today feature (which i'll tell you more about tomorrow)
i'm not entirely sure whether this counts as a sign of a dog. but it is a sign with the word 'dogs' on it.
poor little esther spent most of sunday morning throwing up. as a result we ended up diverting down a side road on the way back so esther could get some air.
it wasn't all bad news though as we got to see this dog-eaten dog sign next to where we parked !
(and esther is starting to feel much better now)
this dog sign spotting really is a game for all the family. here is a dog sign spotted by my nephew thomas, eagerly sent by his parents.
i've already got a spot of this particular dog sign, but i thought it worth posting this photo as Thomas' expression really captures the excitement of a dog sign spotting.
i love it when categories collide. how about this. it's a glove on a dog sign.
we approached it by walking up a slippery icey field and just as it came in to sight the clouds parted and it was illuminated by the sun. as soon as i'd finished taking the photos it went back to being dark and dismal again !
how can people believe there is no god ?
jane and the girls went to nottingham earlier this week. as we learnt over christmas, nottingham is the centre for lost gloves and fancy dog signs (like this one).
it was therefore no surprise when they returned with these great dog signs:
and these gloves:
and here is kezia in Ikea with a glove:
it's always great to see new dog signs. these were in a car window. the one on the left is advertising a dog groomers.
we all love a mystery. so how about this one, used with kind permission . see original here
photo spotted and kindly donated by A Different Eye
a sign FOR a dog rather than of a dog, but it'll still do.
our friend andrew is shown here to give you some idea of the oversized nature of this dog sign.
a sign showing doggie corporal punishment for doggie fouling.
with a nice heart drawn round it.
just look at the size of this dog sign near Nottingham. it's huge.
i saw it a few weeks ago and made it my business to return to take a photo.
i decided that it needed a person in the shot so you can appreciate its size. so here i am 'modelling' the sign.
what does the 'check your dog' bit mean ? it's also interesting to note that someone has ringed the penalty fee - £1000.
bit like this one:
it's hard to describe the feeling when i find a dog sign which i haven't seen before. look at this one !
i saw this dog last time i came to belgium, but he's a good 'un, so here he is again.
dog signs on the pavement in Cottingham, Hull-shire.
to make this sign even better it's in Finkle Street. Finkle has got to be one of the best words ever hasn't it ? say it over and over to yourself. first softly then loudly, then slowly in a low pitched voice, then really fast in a high pitched voice.
now you've got it. here's kezia with the sign (and a balloon):
more restrictions on park use
here is a dog sign in Windsor Great Park. Kezia, wearing a dalmation hat, was eager to stand by the sign for a photo.
this is a Dog Warden's roving dog poop warning sign. it's quite an old sign - London telephone numbers changed format ages ago.
This indicates that there's been no inflationary pressure on the maximum fine associated with 'fouling' over this period. Perhaps there are other pressures keeping this price down.
Of course the whole dog fouling problem would be solved if dog's rear delivered gold rather than the current stuff. then owners would be very keen to pick it up and take it home.
So either someone's got to invent a way of making dogs drop gold or else we need a dog poop to gold converting machine which would result in a financial value being attributed to each doggie do.
as the saying goes: where's there's muck there's brass. (note the two/three hidden words in 'brass').
there's a lot of action in this sign, but i think the dog has jumped in to the bushes and disturbed the birds.
that can happen.
so don't let it.
this isn't so much a sign of a hound as a sign for hounds.
dog soup in brussels.
there's been some great dog signs in Ghent. they've been a joy to find.
here's a dog straining following his success:
here's a dog weeing. it's in the same cartoon style. Cartoons are a big Belgian thing and something they are rightly proud of:
but look at this - it's all the Ghent dog signs on the same board:
click to inspect
here it is in situ with a nice tower block behind it:
look at this home made beauty. no expense spared here !
This is a great dog sign isn't it ? possibly the jolliest i've ever seen.
and, to my great joy, the chap with his hound is at the conference again this year. i shall get an up-to-date picture before the week is out ... (and here it is)
Brad also sent me this picture of a hound from the Bronx, NY. i can see a whole raft of US lawsuits by poo-pickers if they try and copy this man's poo-picking posture:
here is a dog sign which i found this evening in a local pub. it's only a few minutes walk from my house yet i'd never seen it before. i find that very intriguing. how many other such signs are there around me that i haven't archived.
that's right, jane and i went to visit one of my favouritist dog signs.
plenty more pictures to follow (i took over 300, but won't bore you with them all just yet). and we've still one more day of scottish photos first.
here is a carved no dog sign:
very similar to this one, but with feet and lacking a line through it.
possible modelled by the same man and dog that modelled for this one ?
from the same place as this one. It's a bit battered, but it's a beauty !
dog sign on Inchy Island
i did do an interview recently for a national magazine which i'm very excited about. i can't tell you any more at present and i don't want to get our hopes up too much. hopefully i'll be able to tell you more next month ...
when i did the interview they requested a nice photo of me 'in action', so here it is. it's me with a local dog sign.
it's not really me in action as i haven't got my camera. luckily pete had it to take my photo.
another varient on a classic dog.
service stations are great for dog signs as well as slippery signs.
here's a door sign (from both sides of the door):
here's a dog sign on a stick in the car park:
in more detail here:
the opposite applies here:
(from Dan who may wish to comment on his photo in the comments)
here is a no dogs sign from the Oracle centre in Reading. It's on the glass so is a bit tricky to see.
a hyper-realistic threatening dog sign. the most realistic yet.
a red dog on a yellow background. note the angle of its behind.
this is a very slight varient on a classic dog sign. the front legs are more eager than usual so are tucked behind the red line.
it's this attention to detail which is so important for dog sign spotting.
it's always great to find a new hound sign - especially when they approach the subject from a completely different angle.
this one is more like a cloud than a dog. but then, so are some dogs.
here is an old dog which i found whilst searching through some old photos. it was taken in france last year. this dog would be a good friend for these two
cousin mike has a dog. he also has a number of dog signs he was happy to share with you all. some are even clickable for enhanced enjoyment.
bags for large pets a speciality:
enhanced litter functionality:
dogs and bikes aren't appropriate shoes and very detailed dog instructions:
it's good to see pictures of dogs some of which aren't already in my collection. here are a selection of dog signs seen whilst on holiday.
luckily this dog is heavy enough to keep this floating man from blowing away:
small dog on silver plaque on brick wall:
dog eager to leave the scene:
life ring supplied in case of real emergencies:
this is a local dog sign. to my surprise i haven't blogged it before and it is slightly different from other dog signs i've got. specifically the little red cross by its back leg. not to be confused with this one
it's been ages sinces i've found a new sign of a hound. so it gives me great pleasure to present you with one today.
remember this dog from Tegel airport ? The picture i took last time was quite simply rubbish as i'd taken it from the reverse side of the door and the lighting was all wrong. my bastest photoshopping still wasn't good enough.
this evening i refound the cafe where the sign was last time and it was still there. i climbed across a customer and caputered this photo in all it's glory.
i was very pleased to get this photo and can only apologise for the poor quality of my previous attempt
here is a sign of a dog which looks more like a cow. notice the skinny tail and ear. esther spotted another sign next to this one. she said "why is there a picture of a camera with a line through it ?". ooops
a dog sign on a bank. not sure what the eye one means. no winking at the bank staff ?
here is a picture of a hound and a rather mysterious shape which looks unforunately a little like a bottom.
i spotted this sign on a door to pub which doesn't sell food on a sunday night in Hartley Wintney on our way back. we were dissapointed by the food, but over the moon (non eclipsed) about this sign-spot.
a bloke behind the pub asked for the URL of the website, so maybe he'll leave a comment and tell me the name of the pub so i recommend it to dog sign spotters everywhere ?
is this the same bloke who modelled this picture ?
i've seen this dog before. This time it was different as i found the sign tucked away behind some railings. he is a picture of me holding that sign and 'making it my own'.
we drove through an army barracks this afternoon. i spotted a picture of a dog on a sign and I risked getting shot by jumping out of the car and getting a photo. jane was more than happy to drive the car in to the firing line so i could get my shot
if you look carefully to the right of the photo you can see the guard dog.
here is a row of signage from the side of the Arlanda Express in Stockholm. I saw the sign of the dog described in the train safety instruction book so walked up and down the train looking for it on windows etc.
I didn't find it, so reread the booklet to find that it said the sign was on the outside of the train. As we approached the airport I asked the ticket collector which end of the train dogs were allowed. She said "at both ends, but if you are disabled then you can have them in the middle".
So i ran down to the front of the train to get the sign, but when i got there the sign wasn't there. in fact it was at the back of the train which went whizzing a few seconds later before i could take a photo.
so i made the chap i was travelling with wait 15 minutes for the next train. i postitioned myself at the back of the platform so i could get the photo. the train arrived and ... the dog sign on this train was at the front. so i ran down the platform just in time to get this photo:
definately worth the wait i'd say. look at the variety of signs, and the very angular dog
here is a sign of a dog from a charity shop door. it's quite like a previously seen dog, but the tail is slightly different. very interesting. perhaps it was from the same doggy's portfolio.
here is a good picture of dog. is it a sign for dogs, about dogs or told by a dog ? can you trust a dog to tell you about strangers ? has the man in black got a dog's head ? is he just a shadow ? are the children strangers (or do they know each other). the sign just contributes to confusion in my opinion.
whatever it means, it does contain a nice detailed picture of a dog:
hey, someone else is collecting pictures of dogs !
here are some dog signs
(this site was discovered by swara when she was trying to find a random google which would get her back to the funkypancake site - i'm not responsible for the content of the site, some of which might not be family friendly)
here is a dog picture from the london underground. i've never seen a dog on the underground. i've seen pigeons but never dogs. it's a different story in europe of course where dogs are taken everywhere.
here is another picture of a dog. this one has lots of detail. the person's arms look a bit mechanical. however, he's bending his back very sensibly to avoid back strain.
here it is on a seperate occasion facing the other way
slight varient on the usual dog sign. more rounded. was on a charity shop door
i went, and i jolly well got, that photo of a hound from the revolving restaurant.
here is a hound doing a nice leg kick. there is another dog picture i must obtain but it's in a revolving door so it's tricky. i shall do my best to obtain this photo for you dear readers this evening.
someone has a pet bowl which they have tied up to this post.
here is the sign of the hound:
here is a picture of dogs on a door in a restaurant in tegel airport.
better photo of this exhibit here
i don't know much (or care about) dogs. but here is a no-dogs sign of a version i haven't seen before.
you may wonder about the legality of signs which threaten fines for dog fouling, and more importantly who gets to keep the money. here's the answer travelling through UK parliament at the moment:
Litter and Fouling of Land by Dogs Bill
I was watching Open All Hours last night.
a customer entered the shop having recently stood in some dog poo. He said "I blame the owners".
The Ronnie Barker character responded "I agree ... and the dogs"
I've heard of local restaurants catching cats, dogs etc to cook and serve to unsuspecting customers. I hadn't heard of 'girl guide hot dogs' before
note: I've put this in the 'signs of dogs' category as it is a sign of a (hot) dog.
( not to be confused with guide dogs )
here is a sign on the Royal Festival Hall door:
It's a very square dog with a mad eye
looks like the chap is holding a baby's bottle.
another sign with a dog on it. notice how the person has not bent their knees to pick up the waste. The dog looks eager to get away before any serious back injuring is sustained
this has a feel of infinity (binfinity maybe). it's on a dog poo bin and seems to requesting kids' waste too.
in the picture the grown up looks like they are carrying a box with themselves and the kid and dog in. or perhaps it's a portable tv showing a video of themselves.
whatever, it's a mirror within a mirror within a mirror or real life don't you think ?
i have been taking pictures of dogs on signs for the last week to add to my blog in a new category called Signs (of dogs)
(i have a number pending publication - there is only so much you can do with a french keyboard in an Internet cafe with the euro-meter running).
incredibly, it seems that grahame is also collecting similar pictures for his blog. looky here now
i find it interesting that dog signs are so unique. a dog is a dog right ? where are the european sign conventions ?
i don't like dogs, but i do like signs about dogs.
here is a picture of a dog on a sign.
is the dog attempting to poo on the red cross ?
has it failed twice and hopes for a winning third poo ?
why is the cross steaming ?
i like the word 'poo'
