people looking sideways »
according to the polish taxi driver who picked me up from heathrow to take me back home after my warsaw trip, people in Poland have their wedding photos on a different day to their actual wedding. As a result they are a lot more relaxed and can be more 'set up'. He knew this as he was going back to Poland to get married (today in fact i think)
when i was in poland last week i got to explore Park Lazienkowski which was lovely
there were lots of people having their wedding photos which made for a great spectator sport.
you can see what this place looks like from the sky on google maps
even as i left there were more pouring in !
i crossed over the road rather than walk past these two and be given a leaflet. i'm probably not in their target demograph or something.
i'm currently doing a short nightschool course on studio portrait photography with Tony (not big eye). it's very good, and has revealed i'm essentially clueless on proper photography !
i was quite pleased with the photo above though, and the one below isn't bad. the subject is another chap on the course.
here's my homage to Going Underground's underground fashion thing. all people showed here allowed me to take their photo.
very pointy shoes are cool too.
here is preacher dave and preacher steve.
this chap was taking a picture of a litter picker-upper so i took a picture of him taking his pictures to show you. when he had finished photoing i explained that i too took pictures of random objects in the street
"why do you do that ?" he said
"to put on my website, funkypancake.com" i said
"how about you, why do you take pictures like that ?" i said
"because they don't have these kind of litter pickers in India and i've see lots of old people stooping over picking up litter and a device like this would really help them out." he said
"you're reasons are much nobler than mine" i said
and off we both went.
what with him and the chap on monday i'm beginning to wonder if i'm not fullfilling my full potential
i had a chat with this chap who sat next to me on the tube yesterday afternoon. he'd found the flower you see here on the street and had picked them up and was taking them home.
he asked my opinion of them and we got chatting about street finds and my blog. he gave me a bit of a telling off for not picking up my finds and caring for them ("it would have been better if you had never seen them, than just take a picture and walk away - it's like taking pictures of war victims").
but when i showed him some of the pictures of the stuff i photograph he realised taking some of the things home would be impractical.
anyway, he said he might be in touch via the website and he said hoped he'd be famous by his picture appearing here. which he probably is now.
so, hello mr flower-man if you're reading !
the sun hadn't risen by the time i left the house. a sure sign winter is on the way. getting to london early is great though as there's hardly anyone about.
one place i always see people is in this church entrance. outside-livers ('tramps' doesn't sound right) spend the night there and are often waking up to a new day as i walk past.
yesterday i noticed they'd even constructed a cardboard wall to create a private bed area. the white socks resting on the top particularly appealed.
earlier this week they had their newspapers delivered too i noticed. a pile of big issues turned up on a lorry for them to sell
this tourist was very happy for me to take a picture of him wearing two pairs of glasses. especially after i explained that i too often wear two pairs.
what is it with seaside resorts and goths ? there's always loads of them milling around dressed in black and looking moody.
goths always make me smile. i used to be one but i wasn't very good because i was always smiling. i couldn't help it. we all looked so funny.
i'd planned to go for my last long walk before the marathon in windsor park on saturday. unfortunately the pope's funeral meant Prince Charles moved his wedding to saturday and my walk got off to a very slow start as i battled through the crowds.
i decided to make the most of the event and get a few pictures.
here are some of the wedding watchers
enthusiastic salesmen
father and son (this pictures says more about british society than any other i've taken i think !)
click for big
this lady had a point to make. either that or she was 20-odd years late for Charles' last marriage.
it's a job. but i imagine you're not allowed much creativity.
it's amazing what you don't quite see when you walk through london parks at a very early hour.
this picture matched my eyes.
it's a wooden man with a flourescent jacket. looks like he can be turned upsway down to get a negative version of himself.
very strange.
here's a photo i've been saving since july. it's my christmas gift to you dear reader.
this couple very kindly let me take their photo in a scottish shopping centre. i suspect they might get asked this a lot as they instantly struck up this catalogue model pose.
they belong to the Clan Colquhoun (i wrote this down so i wouldn't forget) and were totally lovely people !
they made me smile and i hope they do the same to you on this jolliest of days.
i tend to walk a bit faster than other people, especially on the way to or from the station.
in the morning there's usually not many people about but in the evening i sometime verge on the edge of pavement rage when i get stuck behind a group of wide-walkers with big bags (especially when i've timed my 38 minutes walk to get a specific train).
this evening i got stuck behind a pirate. but instead of getting angry i decided to ask if i could take a photo. so here it is.
there's a moral here (somewhere). And it's good to know pirates aren't as scary as they used to be.
i think they've been on a government pirate integration program.
and yes, i did miss my train.
here is a waiter man in a bar.
we challenged him to a three way game of paper, scissors, stone. Although we didn't realise at the time.
his prize for winning was letting him use my camera to take this photo of my work colleagues. note the appearance of long lost sara (once known as lady with cakes):
this lady let me take a picture of her collecting money for phab. I don't often give money to street collectors as you can never be too sure where the money will end up.
But i made an exception for her as she looked fantastic, was really jolly, and was representing a good charity.
i saw the scooby doo movie on sunday night. walking behind this lady rushing for my train i became convinced it was scooby in disguise.
as i went past i stole a glance. it wasn't.
esther has a book called What Do People Do All Day?. it's very good and makes you wonder ... what people do all day.
our friends heather and clive run a professional chauffeur company called Executive Direct and transport people all over the place. clive was particularly excited this morning to tell me all about his new car, which seems more like a luxury ocean liner than a taxi.
i used to have a picture of it here, but i removed it for copyright reasons (related to archiving)
these two ladies had exactly the same clothes, and hair and backpacks and shoes and were walking in sync with each other.
unfortunately too many cars were in the way and i only got a clear shot when they turned the corner.
how strange it would be to have an identical twin.
it's that time of year when new students have to do comedy things to prove they are new. here are a couple of rugby teams taped together in groups of four climbing up the stairs.
this lady sells newspapers outside St Paul's Tube Station (why did Saint Paul need his own Tube Station ? Stations of the cross or something maybe).
anwyay, i'd seen her picture on another website recently so i mentioned this to her and she said in a really giggly voice "ooooh, i'm famous" !
here is a strange chap/lady in a window i saw last night. i didn't go closer because i was slightly too scared.
a friend is someone you can lean on.
here is steve. we had lunch today and it was very good. so there.
remember trolley man ? i haven't seen him for a while, but did this morning thanks to my decision to walk a different way this morning. i saw the man himself with a few trolleys, but here are a few other trolleys he had lined up around adjacent streets.
i love the fact there's a massive table on the one on the left:
and this one is good enough to be a desktop picture. so click on it and help yourself !
these people pointed at me as i walked by so i took a photo of them enjoying looking at me. so we were all happy (though i was a little paranoid afterwards)
the US and UK have a special relationship. so our politicians tell us.
here it is in practice. takes up a lot of space on the bench don't they ?
as a result of their 'special relationship' members of the public can't relax.
these chaps are made of chocolate. just like the real ones. churchill was renown for melting in front of a hot fire on winter's evening.
it was the hurst horse show and contry fair this afternoon. bit wet but lots of fun. one of my favourite bits was this lady who did a turn dancing with her dog to lo-fi music over the tannoy system. it was quite remarkable.
but you would have guessed that to look at her.
this lady was selling knives in a reputable department store so i don't think she was diddling people. But she was really funny to listen to. Partly her accent but mostly her patter.
she opened her pitch by saying "these are the world's most advertised knives" and along the way cut a chunk out of her bread board and the end off a hammer.
"these knives stay sharp forever, so you'll never have to buy another one" and then a few minutes later, "Buy one today and i'll give you two more for free, and i'll even throw in 2 other knives".
So, like i only need one of these for the rest of my life, but you are going to give me 5 ? Needless to say we didn't buy any, but i did enjoy the show !
i spotted a lovely little old lady with a massive white hat on walking on the opposite side of the road. she looked so sweet i thought i should take her photo.
unfortunately on my first attempt my camera wasn't in focus and on my second attempt a bus turned up and a taxi drove by. a second later she was on the bus and long gone.
but you get the idea.
after the car boot sale we went to the Southern Counties Game Fair. there were some fantastic characters there.
this bloke was watching his steam engines:
and this bloke was poking a pack of beagles with a stick:
here is elvis. he's a famous local character in the town of reading. he's also a really nice chap (despite being convinced he's elvis). when i used to live in reading town i used to take him to nighclubs with my friend paul and we all had a fantastic time !
here he is doing an elvis pose for the website
what was i saying about the pixie people the other day (see comments) ? As soon as you believe they are there you start seeing them.
today was no exception. here is a pixie girl doing some shopping with a tin man in dungarees and a man in a skirt.
this man is selling peacock feathers in tottenham court road. he doesn't speak much but did allow me to take his photo for the website for 50p.
moments before i'd seen a business man wearing a black cloak and an eye patch looking very bizarre. the two people passed within a few centimetres of each other and i half expected them to explode and/or suddenly disappear.
but they didn't. which is lucky. otherwise i wouldn't have got this picture for you.
following the classic who is brother edd ? entry of a few days back, here is a Who Is Tony ? entry.
Tony often leaves comments. He's not Big Eye Tony. That's a different one.
This Tony comes round to our house with his family and looks a bit like Bill Gates. tony is a man and is married to his wife and has two girls aged the same as our two. so that's four things we have in common (note - i am married to my wife not his).
Here he is playing jane's guitar whilst listening to The Strokes' debut album. he hadn't heard their music (or album) before and so what he played did not resemble the music he heard. it was in the right key however.
this tony also plays jenga (actually our poor copy version from a high street store, but some concept)
this tony is also a very good friend. to celebrate this friendship we give each other (the same) ballerina pen holder each birthday/christmas.
so there we have it. a very quick summary of tony.
you may be wondering who brother edd is. well he's my brother and his name is edd. esther calls him brother edd too which is quite funny (in the same way that kezia calling me dave is quite funny).
here is esther and edd both wearing the blue wig. esther looks very shifty. brother edd looks normal.
i've decided to take pictures of people in london who look interesting (with their permission).
here is my first person who has eyes like flies.
