i get a lot of emails asking how i manage to take such exquisite photos of gloves. so in the best spirit of photo sites such as strobist, here's a picture showing how i do it.
from the shadow you can see that i simply hold my camera and point it at the thing i'm trying to photo.
on new year's day we went for a family walk and spotted a glove. nothing unusual there.
but then my mother in law picked it up and put it on. she'd forgotten one of her own gloves you see.
and so we continued on our walk (here's thomas, sil binky and kezia)
it was a there-and-back walk and when we got back to the point where found the glove, my mother in law looked for a place to put the glove so the owner would find it.
my father in law suggested the sign post and was the only one who could reach it.
here he is looking very unsuspicious
so if this is your glove, you know where to find it. and thanks for the loan.
do you ever wonder where the old gloves go that i see and photograph. i don't.
but here's one we saw last week, but a week later. it's managed to climb up the hedge.
we had an obligatory family point at this one. even jane joined in (from a suitable distance)
(this one is for new reader ellen who wrote a short story of odd socks once and found me via the russel davies' always excellent blog)
i hadn't spotted many gloves for ages until yesterday when i saw loads.
here is one on the road approaching the Savoy Hotel (note the cars driving on the wrong side of the road as is their tradition outside the savoy). i nearly got run over taking this photo (click it to see the glove and the Savoy hotel properly)
here's a close up of the glove
and here are a load of gloves on the bank of the thames
and finally, here's one which might be a glove but might not be:
last week i got an email from Mange Tout saying he too had a glove photo website which you can view here. i notice he's found some other glove websites too !
here is one of kezia's gardening gloves (every 3 year old should have some). it was on our living room floor being illuminated through the window.
update: Desktop Sized picture here
i bumped in to a friend on the tube last week i hadn't seen for about 3 years. he's called al, but i call him alvin.
and then i saw him again randomly in paddington station a few days later.
on one of the times i saw him i also saw this glove
we're getting towards the end of the glove season in the UK right now, so here's a few i've been holding back.
i saw hundreds and hundreds of gloves whilst i was doing the london marathon, but i decided early on there was no point trying to get photos as i couldn't keep up with them without stopping (and causing trouble for those behind me).
but if you ever want a new jumper, gloves, hat or even a bum bag, then it's worth following a marathon course. it's full of discarded cardies.
here is a typical glove
esther and kezia's grandfather reporting a glove sighting near our holiday cottage. so my brother in law and i took our children in search of it.
we found two. and a muddy old hat.
cousing thomas and esther
kezia and esther and glove 1
cousin thomas and kezia and esther and glove 2
esther and kezia and the very muddy hat
as part of my marathon training i've been really trying to take photos without stopping.
this is quite a challenge as it requires a quick reaction when i see an object worth photoing.
so, i was very pleased with this glove which came out sharp enough to make a nice desktop background.
it's a long glove with short finger places.
i really hope this isn't a sock in disguise
nottingham is robin hood country. he robbed the rich to give to the poor. the same could be said for gloves.
perhaps.
thanks to brother in law kev for these pictures
these gloves were on display in a giant box outside london's design museum.
this glove looks the business for shifting 'business'.
my collection of glove sighting's aren't just lost gloves. here is a good example of some gloves which probably weren't lost, but are still worth photoing.
kezia spotted these when everyone else missed them. she's a true protege in the glove spotting department
black and white
i love it when categories collide. how about this. it's a glove on a dog sign.
we approached it by walking up a slippery icey field and just as it came in to sight the clouds parted and it was illuminated by the sun. as soon as i'd finished taking the photos it went back to being dark and dismal again !
how can people believe there is no god ?
i got an email yesterday from annie of www.lostglove.co.uk asking if she could link to my glove collection.
of course she can, and to thank her, you can go visit her collection too. whilst i go for the non-interventionist approach (ie capture them in their natural environment and leave them be), annie takes them home and cares for them (rather like i do when i find a passport photo).
As a result i don't think she's got many of the rather clinical medical ones i seem to spot round the back of hospitals !
www.lostglove.co.uk also links to other glove sites and this rather interesting article.
it's great weather for glove finding at the moment. here are a few i've found in the last few days:
jane and the girls went to nottingham earlier this week. as we learnt over christmas, nottingham is the centre for lost gloves and fancy dog signs (like this one).
it was therefore no surprise when they returned with these great dog signs:
and these gloves:
and here is kezia in Ikea with a glove:
is it right i get my children to point at gloves on the street ? they do seem to enjoy it.
take this find for example. esther spotted it and practically threw herself at it to be in the photo !
no gloves or children were harmed in the making of this photo (and esther didn't touch it!)
a fluffy red glove:
two plastic red gloves:
a glove picking things out the bin:
two gloves with views:
vinopolis:
and southward cathedral:
there were three gloves on my favourite glove-railings this morning.
compare to what i saw last time and you'll notice there's been a slight change. someone's taken the pair and replaced it with a faux-leather singular glove.
what we have here is an actual, modern, working glove exchange
gloves are particular tricky to take whilst walking at speed. my first attempt (on the left) was pittiful, but as the walk progressed my accuracy improved.
i took this photo of lots of red gloves through some railings and a security chap came up to me and said "what are you doing" ?
"taking pictures of these gloves" i said
"well, be careful" he said. "they are toxic"
as i began to walk away he said "that's why we thrown them in there".
so now we know. just don't stand too close to your screen, ok.
i walked down a small section of street this morning which had a number of gloves stuck on the railings, rather like last week's coke drinks.
and here's the one from last week which is still there. but it's now got a spider's web attached (or maybe it's spiderman's glove and the web has shot out from the glove) ?
there's different ways of taking photos of gloves. generally i go for the reportage approach and simply take them as they lie.
occasionally i like to indulge myself in a little creative photography to liven what can, occasionally, be a slightly mundane photographic subject.
so, here is a negative image of a glove on some railings:
click to expand beyond your wildest dreams
and here is the same glove taken with a long exposure with the street panning out behind it:
it's not always easy to get photos of gloves. these two were in the middle of quite a busy road junction outside Paddington Station.
i had to pre-focus my camera and dodge traffic to get the second of these photos !
unless you know what you are doing, i urge you not to follow my example.
looks like a pair but they were seperated by a few metres down the street
classic rubber glove:
black glove by a giant flower lorry:
kezia pointing at a glove:
another glove close up:
the one on the right turned out to be esther's so i had to go back out in to the street and retrieve it (luckily it wasn't too far from our house)
here are the latest consignment on glove photos from brother (in law) kev.
here is a small shoe:
and here is his nephew with a glove:
and here are some other gloves taken with his camera phone:
hat:
two gloves:
just the box.
what a way to celebrate the 200th glove ! it's one resting on the railings with the mannequin pis in the background.
i was so excited to see it i went off and bought myself some fingerless gloves from the glove seller round the corner.
hoorah for glove collecting and significant milestones.
had it not been for the eurostar disaster i wouldn't have seen this glove on the other side of Lille.
here are some gloves from brother-in-law kev:
and here is another glove:
here is a glove sent from brother kev. he's recently moved to Nottingham and can confirm that it's rich pickings up there.
i also got an email from Rebecca pointing me to these great sign photos:
here are two photos sent by me dear readers.
on the left are some humanoid state-side bollards sent from cheryl. she questioned whether these chaps were bollards since they were doing the same job.
my motto is "if it quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck" (unless it's a cunning cat trying to catch duck by impersonating them). so, yes. i think it's a bollard
on the right is a glove from nottingham sent by brother-in-law kev who has just moved up that way and likes sending me pictures of gloves
glove in luscious green grass.
luscious is a word which used to be used a lot by teenage girls (when i was a teenage boy). as in "that's so lush".
maybe they still do.
i also saw this rubber glove and its suspicious looking bag (which was empty)
UPDATE: Having not seen the word Lush for nearly 20 years, i saw it an hour after posting this picture. see hear (look sea)
look what i found in our local supermarket - it's a glove on a slippery-sign bollard
i thought i'd seen a nice purple glove in a plant pot this morning but it turned out to be these plants (with a spoon nestling in the background).
i was quite glad they were just plants as i was concerned that someone had stolen my new business plan, which is to create a line of knitted goods which have more than the usual set of parts.
i'm thinking of 6 (or more) fingered gloves. you'd still be able to wear them, you'd just have an extra finger hole available.
or what about a jumper with three arms ? Or trousers with three legs ?
is anyone willing to prototype any of the above for me ? i think we could be on to something with the 6 (or more) fingered gloves so perhaps we should start there.
i think this art-concept (for that is what it is my friends) needs a name. something along the lines of 'extra-digits' or 'more-of-the-same' but i'm sure you can help me here.
be great to get something in the shops before Christmas.
look at all these things spilling out around this bin.
there's a genuine roman plastic pillar:
an ironing board:
and a glove:
gloves seen on the way home last night
we're in for a cold winter in the UK apparently. it's global warming (hey?). bad news for the environment, but great news for glove spotting.
it's not even really cold yet and here's a red glove in a black glove. this means someone has already started wearing twin-gloves.
it's a sign about gloves.
we spotted this glove on the way back from church but because we had visitors i couldn't walk down the street to photo it for you.
luckily zach was keen to track the glove down and provided the ideal excuse to go and photo it. so here is the glove. and here is zach.
these gloves might have been shoes. difficult to tell.
they obviously belonged to a teeny weeny baby. when you are that age your hands and shoes are interchangable anyway.
they can hide, but i'll always find them.
there were many gloves at Reading Festival and i couldn't hope to take pictures of them all because of the endless pushing crowds, so here are two blue ones that can represent the rest of the unphoto'd
bike rides can be quite slow when you have to keep stopping to take photos of things left on the road. i missed a few good shots, but i did stop for this glove.
first scottish glove find
might be a glove. or a sock. dunno. i should have gone and picked it up, but i didn't fancy it. so i didn't.
glove on the bank of the thames. lucky for us it was low tide, otherwise we may have missed it !
highly unseasonal
esther spotted this glove on the fence next to our church. she was very excited at her spot which could only be seen out of her window !
the yellow gloves had gone and in their place were these two red ones. VERY mysterious
actually. no banana tree. just the gloves
would suite man (or woman) with slightly weird hands
summer glove season is on and winter glove season is officially over.
we've been in that inbetweeny period where it's been too hot for winter gloves, but too cold for people to go outside and get their painting/DIY/medical gloves on.
i almost missed this black glove against the dark background. it appeared to be made of leather and was outside our local posh supermarket.
it's probably some chauffeur's driving glove
this wasn't actually an abandoned glove, but it was nicely positioned for a photo with St Paul's in the background.
a budget home medical kit ?
traditionally more famous for chocolate than gloves, belgium offers a wide variety of glove poses. these pictures were sent from Dan near San Francisco.
the glove next to the wedding dress is particularly poignant.
i love email. and blogs. and life really.
here are some gloves from america. Those travelling from the south of england should turn left on the way up to scotland and keep going. don't be sidetracked by the funny-speaking people on the way - you will meet lots of funny-speaking people when you get there.
when you do get there, go to a place called Phoenix Arizona, and ask for Jason of what's THAT about
he found these gloves whilst out cycling. you can see his tyre on the left
he writes "I've been putting together a collection of 'shoes' in the road images..it always amazes me that there will be one lonely abandoned shoe in the middle of the road and I wonder how it got there.. I wrote a haiku about it. it's on my site."
go find.
here are some gloves from brother kev (husband of my wife's sister). he was on a walk up a mountain/hill/incline and found them. so excited was he at his find that he phoned me from his windy external position
in his email he informs us that "All found on one walk, Sunday 21st March ‘04, Mothers day. During a walk up, I think it was called, sugar loaf hill, Great Malvern."
good finding kev. well done sir !
my first nautical glove
i went to gatwick today and saw gloves galore. i had struck a very rich seam of mostly laytex gloves
here are a couple of beautiful glove pictures. we were so lucky find them set amongst such beautiful scenary. jane took the shot on the left and the challenge was on for me to find a glove to compete with this shot.
i did find a glove (two actually) but her shot was better. everyone loves a good lost glove photo duel.
a nicely presented glove
a purple gloves next to the double purple lines on a london street. the purple lines denote that the road is one of London's red routes.
three generations of glove finders out on a walk were bound to find some gloves.
my mum spotted this one first:
close up view:
and then i found this in a little stream:
here is a photo from brother kev (jane's sister's husband as seen on the blog at christmas with a low hat - we've very informal around here and ignore the traditional 'in-law' thing).
it's a very good picture and would make a terrific background for any desktop.
kev says:
I’ve started carrying my camera around and hey presto, in only three days my first glove.
Totally genuine, found on a tree stump beside a path just behind Elm Park in Thame, Oxfordshire, at about 12.30pm on Thursday 12 Feb 04
And here it is all for you
here is another fluffy glove. the one on the right looked like it was a glove from a distance so i got my camera out as i approached it.
unfortunately it was not a glove. it was in fact a "doggie-do" which had been deposited in a glove resembling way.
i deliberately didn't use flash. (perhaps i should have used 'flush')
nice to start the week with another lost glove. especially one as stripey as this.
one walk, four gloves
a glove on my train at 12.15 this morning.
this woolen glove was in the middle of the road and was extremely flat (like a cartoon character run over by a steam roller).
i was pleased to see it was giving me the 'thumbs up' despite the obvious traumas it had been through.
esther and kezia examine a glove on the wall
i've been to some work do tonight. i've been out every night this week so far and will be tomorrow and have a music practice on friday night. this makes me very popular at home.
i found this glove on the floor in the pub next to The Barbican Centre in London. i went in there as i arrived at my meeting 30 mins early.
here is a glove jane found in windsor park. it was on a fence post in front of the General Stores.
it may even have belonged to one of her majesty's grandchildren. but probably not.
ebony and ivory. live together in perfect harmony.
two gloves, one nature reserve. one black, one white. one rubber, one leather. both lost in a strange world.
(this should prove very popular with those who like to look at damp gloves - in particular those people who end up at this site by doing a search for 'glove wet look problem' in google.)
glove at marylebone station last night:
glove temporarily abandoned by some loo police at the office christmas party
a white glove this morning - taken without flash hence the shadeyness
transparent glove. perhaps it's a ghost glove.
esther and a one penny piece
esther with one glove, then a few moments later with the other glove
here is a glove jane and i found on the way back from the Villa nightclub. i enjoyed the club immensley, but jane wasn't so sure. part of the problem was that her top became see-through under the ultraviolet lights and all you could see was her bright white bra. this probably wouldn't have been such an issue, only everyone else there was wearing all black.
the music there was excellent. lots of dark grungey noise - as the evening went on things got poppier. highly recommended.
we left about midnightish so we could get full value out of our hotel ! here was glove we found on the way back:
update: i forgot to mention that some random chap tried to sell us some annadin and a swig of coca-cola whilst we were walking to the nightclub ! he was obviously trying to profit on the back of an urban myth.
asher spotted another glove. he stalked it for a while before rushing over and taking its photo. he sent me this photo on wednesday but i forgot to display it and he got all upset (poor chap).
he's under a lot of stress and this is the last thing he needs. i can only apologise and hope that the display of his photo makes up for the sadness i have caused him
the skankiest yet !
it's a glove hat trick
2 gloves on oxford street
wet look glove
here is a glove i saw on the way home last night. the hour changed on sunday so it's dark going home at 5pm, hence my use of flash. However, the flash does bring out that medical yellowy-brown colour you often see on medical things, which is nice.
found by Ash at the Angel tube station, about 4.30pm on Saturday.
esther found a glove. here it is:
the museum also had a comprehensive glove collection showing gloves are not just a modern day stockholm phenominum:
found this on the way to the conference
not sure if this is a repeat, but i liked the angled cobbles which we haven't seen before
stockholm obviously realises its wealth of gloves and incorporates it in to its art:
here is someone hiding under a lampshade in the same art gallery:
and here is a postcard of passport photo shops in Chicago
here are today's found gloves:
stockholm is rich picking for gloves !
lots of gloves spotted this morning in different places. possibly the first two are a pair:
glove finger tip (for precision work?):
here is a fantastic thing. you know i love gloves right ?
well imagine my delight when i found these hanging on a special 'glove line' at Pam's house ! (the fingers in the glove on the right were full of water making them more life like which was a good feature).
this love of gloves must run in the family.
this was a really marvellous glove find. a bright purple one in a residential street
red gloves in oxford street london. interesting that one of them is in a shopping trolley
this glove looked like it's made from hemp, but was probably just woolen
after the glove drought I end up finding three in one day. they've all been good.
the speckled blue one, the tied one and now the red one.
this one is nicely presented on some black railings.
here is a very screwed up glove. looks like one of the fingers had been knotted
i haven't seen a glove for a while so it was with great relief that I found this today. it has a nice blue speckled effect which is especially appealing
i spotted this glove in someone's front garden on the way home last night. unfortunately the owners of the house were unloading their car next to where the glove was lying.
so i said "can i take a picture of this glove for my website please". they didn't really just laughed politely but didn't say anything, so i took the photo anyway.
people are so weird about talking to strangers.
my first (known) international glove
on the way home this evening I walked past the waste disposal part of the Middlesex Hospital. For the discarded gloves spotter, this is a rich seam.
this first photo shows about 6 pairs of gloves spread over the floor (esp the top left of this photo)
this glove was also there, slightly out of the shot above
on Oxford Street no less ...
i find my best gloves near hospitals or medical places. Harley Street is a good place. Here is a quality glove I saw this morning. See how it retains its shape.
The piece of paper was blank. Which said it all (ie nothing).
a woolen thing outside my office. possibly (hopefully) a glove
i saw gerry haliwell in the passenger seat of a car. i looked away to hide my eyes and there on the floor was this glove
another day another glove
harley street this morning (same place as I found one of the gloves yesterday)
Also saw the other workman's glove from yesterday's collection near the original.
another good day for gloves
found by Harley Street:
found by Middlesex Hospital (a little yellowed)
i saw this glove. it was moving down the road on finger tips.
could have been the wind. or something more sinister ...
just saw a bloke sitting on the floor wearing walking boots on his hands (as well as his feet). Maybe it's a new fashion thing. Personally I have no opinion on the whole 'boots as gloves' concept. I would have taken a photo. But it seemed a bit rude. Whitfield Street isn't a cat-walk you know.
