it's new year's eve today so i thought i'd take the opportunity to thank you for continuing to visit

in the last 12 months funkypancake:
walked over 4,100 kms, (40km-ish of which was during the london marathon [and you helped me raise 1,838.68 pounds]), was featured in dogs today magazine, had over 380 thousand unique visitors to the blog causing 545G of traffic over 2.8 million pages served, was featured on radio, had a site upgrade and redesign, averaged over 1700 visitors per day, went curling with olympic gold winners, visited norfolk, the lake district, austria and belgium, posted a pile of photos every day (there's now over 10,000 photos on funkypancake, and as many spelling mistakes), and lots of other stuff besides.

i hope you've enjoyed it as much as i have !

we went ice skating yesterday. there was much talk amongst the children of obtaining 'the balance' like it was some skating-zen nirvana.

kezia suddenly announced she could skate on her own (after being dragged round by the grown ups for nearly 2 hours) and we didn't believe her until off she went ! she had obtained 'the balance' and all was well.

we were promised huge amounts of snow, but we got none. luckily we were visiting friends yesterday who live a few miles east of us and they had had a small frosting of snow.

not quite enough to do anything useful with, like build an igloo (esther's usual request when snow is mentioned), but the girls did their best to extract as much fun as possible.

we went for a family outing to the Cotswold Wildlife Park yesterday and it was very good.

i knew it would be good when i saw this sign, which covers so many different categories and includes the word 'poop' ! Expect lots of pictures of animals over the next few days.

i love the cold. give me my big coat and off i go. i'm awake and i can breathe.

but the short days and lack of sunlight get me down. a lot. in fact i was really miserable for a few weeks until just recently, so apologies to anyone affected by that (jane mostly).

yesterday was the day where the sun is lowest in the year - poopy light to photo by on a dull day.

things should only get better for the next 6 months and my photos should be a bit brighter again.

yesterday was my last office lunch, just family ones to go now. it was also the first one involving crackers.

i wore my paper crown for an important presentation i was giving in the afternoon and i was pleased to see my boss wore his too.

saturday night was my work christmas lunch at the trocadero centre in london which is a very funny place.

we had a really nice time, mostly because we had one of those evening when you realise lots of your work colleagues could also be classed as 'friends' and it was quite easy to involve our spouses in our conversations.

on saturday i took the girls to get a christmas tree. jane told me to try and make it last as long as possible as she was busy making christmas cards.

we saw a sign for christmas trees pointing in to a lawn mower repairing place which seemed like a nice combination, so in we went. things started very well when we came across this 'no dogs' sign:

inside we were offered two options - precut trees or a fresh one from the field, so off we went hunting

then we had to put it through the 'tree netting service'. it was so small (only about 4 foot tall) we needn't have bothered but we wanted to see how it worked !

there was something quite special about going with my daughters to 'catch us a tree' in a field. i've never done it before but i hope we'll do it again. we drive by the field we went in quite regularly so we'll watch out for them growing next year.

bollards have dreadful eyesight which makes playing hide and seek quite tricky.

they have evolved naturally to be bright in colour to overcome their sight problems. a feature we humans exploit by putting them in locations where they can be seen. they are usually so frightened they can't (and don't) move.

isn't that typical - we've not seen a watering can for ages and then two come wandering down the road attached to two shaggy looking chaps carrying plants.

these chaps looked really depressed as they sloped down the road, but they were quite symetrical with their watercans and plants.

i asked if i could take a photo and unfortunately (for us) they smiled.

visitin alan meant going in to hospital which is a place which i really don't like. having both our children in this hospital has added some a cheery angle to the place, but it still has too many (quite literally) painful memories and i always feel very dizzy in there.

they are doing lots of building work in there and i got lost for at least 30 minutes wandering around the place. i was definately in places i shouldn't have been during some of that time (by accident). And what's more, no one i spoke to knew where the ward i wanted was.

i kept passing signs like this one, which is a 'stairs directory'. i like how you have to leave the hospital to get to 'all other depts'. i also read 'inpatient' as 'impatient' which sounded much better.

absolute classic is having the elderly care outpatients and falls clinic on the top floor up three flights of stairs !

on the way out of the hospital (which i left through a half open emergency exit door as i couldn't find the real way out) i spotted these crutches and one of those things a drip hangs on. someone managed to escape.

our friend and regular commenter alan (he of the amazing insect knowledge) has been in hospital for a fortnight with inside badness. he's making a good recovery and is in good spirits, although still in a lot of discomfort.

part of his treatment involved him measuring all his liquids in and out on a little (wee) chart. he even had a tiny spitoon which needed to be measured.

anyway, all our funkypancake best wishes go to alan - hopefully he'll be out soon !

i'm sure i remember coming to london when i was young and seeing some city gents in their bowler hats, but since then i've only seen one chap wearing a bowler and he was a nutty chap standing on a street corner, shouting religious words to anyone who would listen, after a hard day in the office. but he did look like a genuine bowler wearer.

perhaps when i get to heaven i'll meet him and tell him i remember him well.

however, yesterday, i spotted this chap with a bowler hat coming out of the Financial Times building. he even put his bowler on for a moment but then whipped it off as he ran for his cab.

here's a sign from a german escalator. there's a dog sign in there, but the most intriguing one is the bottom right. it looks like her red scarf is made from the same material as her shoe heel. crazy belgians.

kezia spotted this body stashed under a row of work shirts in a traditional british clothing shop. she said it must be a man as it had no hair (although it did have makeup).

i pointed out that mannequins often wear wigs and both her and esther were shocked. so we spent most of the rest of the morning looking for wigged mannequins in shop windows.

not a bad way to spend a morning.

if this were a proper blog i'd talk about how watching kezia at a disco party this afternoon was a strange experience as i don't often see her playing with her contemporaries (what with being at work and everything), and how i watched to see if she was a leader or a follower etc and how i thought such parties might go for her in 15 years time.

but it's not, so let me point out the toddler in his baby walker zooming about between the manic 3 and 7 year olds with minimum effort because of the very slippery floor

did your school have an internal post system at christmas ? mine did, and so has esther's (and kezia's preschool, but she thinks it's a lucky dip).

it was esther's first school nativity play yesterday afternoon and it was fantastic !

today is the last day the old routemaster buses run on proper bus routes which is a shame. yesterday, to celebrate, a whole load of old routemasters were brought out of retirement to drive down the last remaining route. the ones i saw were a little bashed up and graffiti'd like this one (it was very wonky at the back).

this caught my eye. it looks like an outing for the cabinet office under the guise of the UK presidency of the EU. i myself have benefitted from a presidency event (my recent conference in edinburgh). but mine didn't have arrows pointing to a rather dubious lady picture !

this is a great sign medley. you've got a long sausage dog at the top (rarely seen in dog signs), a cigarette sign the wrong way up (unless the smoke is being blown downwards by an over head fan and a rather compact no bikes sign.

i nearly didn't spot this banksy work on this telephone box as it was on the inside of the glass and didn't show up very well. it was only with this long-ish exposure that it became apparent.

the wording on the monkey says "new catalog is out now". the 'get drunk & disorderly, get arrested, get an £80 fine" is a home office advert and isn't graffiti !

today i am 400 (in months).

that's 33 and third in years. 33 and a third is of course the speed of a long playing record and i am therefore a long player and i'm now old.

i calculated i had enough time to go on the early morning tour of the brussels sewers before my conference started yesterday.

because i was the only one on the tour (it seems it's not very popular) i got a personal tour. this is a demonstration tunnel for visitors

in search of a restaurant last night i came across one of Brussels main music venues and saw the decemberists instead of eating. i think i made the right choice as they were very good.
